Abstract

In the biodeterioration process, termites constitute one of the most important biodegradation agents. In this article, elements about the detection, signs of infestation and damage caused by three termite taxa registered in the inventory to heritage buildings of the Historic Center of Havana were raised. 21 buildings of heritage value were visited and 45 termite samples were collected. The main evidences of infestation of the three taxa were addressed and a key was developed for their identification, based on their signs of infestation. Termites were found affecting various materials such as paper, structural wood, furniture and works of art. In the elaborated key, the separation of the taxa belonging to the Rhinotermitidae family was based on the characteristics of the external channels formed on the different substrates.
