Reconsideración de la localidad tipo de la yaguaza barriguiprieta (Dendrocygna autumnalis) y sus implicaciones taxonómicas y biogeográficas

Resumen

La historia nomenclatural y taxonómica de Dendrocygna autumnalis ha estado marcada por una incertidumbre persistente respecto a los límites subespecíficos y a la localidad tipo original. Este estudio reevalúa evidencia histórica, morfológica, biogeográfica y documental con el objetivo de examinar los tratamientos taxonómicos actuales. La revisión de fuentes históricas indica que la descripción original se basó en una ilustración derivada de un espécimen vivo supuestamente colectado en las West Indies. El análisis comparativo de patrones de plumaje, utilizando registros fotográficos extensivos a lo largo de toda el área de distribución de la especie, incluyendo bases de datos de ciencia ciudadana, revela una diferenciación geográfica consistente. Se identifican tres patrones principales de coloración: un patrón norteño (Norte y Centroamérica) que carece de una zona gris extensa en pecho y dorso; un patrón suramericano caracterizado por una amplia zona gris que separa las regiones rojizas y negras; y fenotipos intermedios concentrados en Panamá, consistentes con procesos de introgresión en una zona de contacto. La evidencia biogeográfica del Caribe respalda además la presencia de ambas formas principales, aclarando la confusión histórica sobre su distribución. La evidencia conjunta respalda la restitución de la localidad tipo original en las “West Indies”, la sinonimización de fulgens bajo autumnalis, el reconocimiento de discolor para las poblaciones suramericanas y la interpretación de las poblaciones panameñas como una zona activa de intergradación y no como una unidad taxonómica distinta.
